Delaware resident uses bankruptcy to overcome divorce

Using bankruptcy, Kelly says she was able to support her children while keeping the family in their home, providing added stability for everyone during a difficult emotional time.

On this blog, we regularly update our readers with the real stories of everyday Americans who have successfully used bankruptcy to overcome their personal financial obstacles. And while we've had entries that dealt with untimely job losses and business failures, this story centers around divorce, a sometimes costly legal process for both parties.

Writing for USA Bankruptcy Guide, an online resource for those considering a filing, Kelly from Delaware shared the story of her struggle.

After Kelly and her husband split, she says he decided to return to Iowa to live with his family, allowing Kelly and her children to stay in their home. But financially, she says her ex was unable to help support her as he was seeking to get back on his own feet after the split.

This left Kelly responsible for the mortgage. Since the debt was in her name, Kelly decided to file for bankruptcy, saying that the process went smoothly, even though she felt guilty about missing payments.

“Before I knew it, the entire process had been completed and I received paperwork in the mail,” she wrote.

Using bankruptcy, Kelly says she was able to support her children while keeping the family in their home, providing added stability for everyone during a difficult emotional time.

“It would have been impossible for me to make enough payments on my single salary to cover all the debts we had intended to pay with our combined salaries and be able to keep the house for myself and my children as well,” Kelly says.

She also noted that she was quickly able to rebuild her credit score following the filing. Within two years of seeking protection, she secured a used vehicle at an affordable interest rate and gained access to credit.
